Not really.

ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte and ASrock, are the good mobo manufacturer's. I would also recommend either a Z87 or Z97 chipset.

If you just need htpc couldn't he just buy an Intel nuc? Not much for prebuilt but its fairly cheap and simple. If there's any other use for it of course build one yourself. But htpc cheapest is best, such simple tasks.

Upgrade-ability? Not 100% sure. Considering the games he wants to play, a nuc is probably a great option.

Yeah I can understand that but he started off wanting something basic and the builds just escalated haha.
