the cpu cooler comes with pre-applied thermal compound on the heatsink. use some coffee filters (dampened with 99% rubbing alcohol) to clean the surface of the cpu.

things you should purchase if not already obtained:
CM 212 heatsink
99% rubbing alcohol
coffee filter (or something that doesnt breakdown)

Haha, I can't believe I didn't notice that, I guess I was too tired. I was up for 32hours, I get a little tired at that point.

Do you mean longevity? I've had lots of q6600 cpu's overclocked for years with fair sized voltage increases, they've yet to die. It's a free performance boost, just takes a little know-how.

Yeah I meant longevity, sorry. I've heard that it can severely impact the useful life. However, after doing some research I'm fairly certain that I can manage to keep it alive with "a little know-how" as you put it :P

That's sort of my problem, now. I'm seeing a bunch of different guides and opinions on how to overclock it. I would like to get to 3.6 without increasing voltage, but there appears to be multiple ways to do it.

Do any of you have any input on what would be the least risky way to increase to 3.6? Thanks again!

You're willing to buy a whole new pc but not willing to raise the voltage of your current? :baby:

I am willing to spend money on a new pc because I would like to have two decently capable desktop PCs. Is raising the voltage not that dangerous? I have no prior knowledge on this, just what I've gained from an hour and a half of research. It seems like many people agree that raising the voltage is the quickest way to potentially fry a computer, and that it should not be necessary to do with a 955.

Please, though, I'd love your suggestions. I am entirely clueless, so if you know otherwise, please help

I would push your processor up to 1.45v for 24/7 usage without even thinking.

Push it up there but don't change the cpu multiplier = win

Lost that when I got married, had two kids and started working graveyards as one of my full-time jobs.

So I've put the CM 212 Evo in and there is no difference in temperature according to speedfan (compared to the old stock cooler) despite not trying to OC yet.

I read on their website that it may take up to 200 operating hours before the temperature settles to what it will normally be at post-installation. Guess I'll wait and hope!

Thank you all for your suggestions
