single core is fine, I was just curious on the gateway. my only requirements are a hd screen, a 1.66 would be the preferable processor, and the obvious upgrade to 2gb ram.

The greater the number of pixels, the greater the power consumption (speaking in a broad sense). Please do note that at 1.66GHz single core, and with the integrated graphics, you almost certainly will not need 2GB of RAM. 1GB of RAM should suffice. To give you an idea of a netbook's performance, it will be able to run Diablo II, but you can't duel (lags too much). It can run video, stream video (lags even when streaming some vide), and do basic things (I find it's great since I can watch multiple movies on one charge).

Getting back to the HD screen topic: The terms "1080p", "1080i", "720p", and "720i" I really hate. I don't even know entirely what they mean. I look at resolution (the number of pixels horizontally by the number of pixels vertically).

The resolution of the Samsung NB200 netbook:
1024x600 (10 inch screen)

So there is 61,440 pixels per inch of screen size on this 10" screen

On a 1280x800 12-inch screen you get 85,333 pixels per inch.

So if you want the best pixels per inch, a 1280x800 screen (or 1440 x 900 13" screen which is even more ideal) would be the way to go.

But if you do want a netbook, 61440 pixels per inch of screensize is great.

If you don't understand what something means you shouldn't try to explain it.

1080p = 1080 vertical pixels
720p = 720 vertical pixels
1080i = interlaced (in a nutshell it means that you only ever see half the pixels at a given frame, you will see a mix of 1 frame with a mix of the other frame, so it is not very clear when you pause it - you see half of 2 frames at once)
720i = read above

So when you see something that can output higher resolution than the maximum supported resolution (such as a netbook advertising 1080p with 600 vertical pixel resolution) it simply means you can plug in an external monitor with 1080p capabilities

Also, you talk about ram as if it has anything to do with speed? RAM = a place to store the various programs that you are running. (example would be if you put your computer in "sleep mode", your session is stored in the ram so that when you resume it will have all your applications open)

Having a bunch of programs open idle and only using 1 at a time would stress the ram more than the processor... so upgrading to 2gb would be a good thing. The only reason you can't have more than 2gb of ram in a netbook is because intel's specifications on the Atom processor limit it to 2gb.

Firstly, I didn't try to explain "1080p" and those other things. I went on to explain screen pixels in relation to pixels vertically and horizontally, and diverged from the whole "1080p" topic. You didn't read into what I said apparently. The reason why I dislike the terms "1080p" and "1080i" and all that is beside the point. What I was explaining to him is simply pixel ratio count.

As for RAM, once again I didn't say anything about RAM having to do with speed (although a greater amount of RAM can allow your processor to run at a more optimal speed). I am very well aware of what each component of a computer does. What I am saying is that with such a slow processor and graphics card, 1GB is about all you'll need to run what the processor & graphics card will be running; there will be very little multitasking going on. The bottle-neck in this situation is going to be the processor in most situations. I've found that my system never really peaks on its RAM useage. 2GB can be a safeguard, however 1GB has been far more than sufficient. Upgrading to 2GB of RAM may be a good thing, however in most cases with a netbook it is not necessary and will be a complete waste of $$$.

The first thing I said was in relation to the quote that I quoted.

The second part was for this:

I have no idea why a netbook would have an HDMI slot (it does have a slot for camera memory cards though).

As for the RAM, like I said it's 1GB and the one slot you are given can take a 2GB stick. Meaning 2GB is maximum. But the processor and graphics card aren't fast at all, so anything higher than 2GB is entirely pointless; 1GB has been fine for me.

So, they would have an HDMI slot for hooking up a monitor with higher resolution.

Secondly, I am pointing out that a lot of newer programs are memory hogs, so there's nothing wrong with getting, and I in fact encourage upgrading the ram. I was also correcting the fact that you can not go higher than 2gb due to intel specifications.

/edti: although you said "2GB maximum" you also said: anything higher than 2GB is entirely pointless - I'm just pointing out that it's not pointless, it's impossible.

You're correcting what I said about RAM? You mean this?:

I swear that sounds like I said 2GB is the maximum. When I said "anything higher than 2GB is pointless" I was explaining that even if he could exceed 2GB, it'd be pointless. Considering that EXACTLY before I made the statement I said that 2GB is the maximum I figured no one would be stupid enough to try to "correct" my "mistake" which I didn't make. ^_^

Yes a lot of new programs are memory hogs, but my end-point is that I haven't needed more than 1GB of RAM for my netbook and I've been doing very well with it. It'll cost $40 (maybe less if you can get a deal, maybe more if you can't) for a 2GB stick of RAM, and I've just found no need for it. All I'm saying.

Also most netbooks don't support HD output to an external screen as far as I know. The resolution of the integrated cards (as of 3 months ago) doesn't go very high.

Well the netbooks with the new graphic accelerator NVIDIA ION can support full 1080p playback and gaming at decent fps...
