So my motherboard (970A-G46) crapped out on me recently and I was looking to replace it. I'm just curious if there are any solid choices that are still in production, as it seems this board is a bit more of a pain to find.

My system was basically:

* Motherboard - MSI 970A-G46
* CPU - AMD FX-6300 Vishera 32nm Technology
* GPU - XFX R7870 Core Edition
* Case - NZXT Phantom 410
* PSU - EVGA Supernova 650

Here is a PCPartpicker link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YKHFwV

I've had it suggested to me to just do a Ryzen 3 upgrade along with the motherboard and just sell my current ram and CPU on ebay to make back some of that investment, but I'm curious what you guys think in general.

I only have about $400 and that's the product of saving for several years... so prefer not to waste it. I wanted to save for a full build upgrade eventually but my Mobo dying sort of messes with that plan. :/

You should be able to find a new board online for $60-70.

Highly recommend you bite the bullet and upgrade to ryzen, you'll get pretty far with $400

I was suggested this:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/N9BvHN

Does that look compatible / like a good choice you reckon?

Get 2 sticks of ram over 1x8 gb
I linked something similar above, would get that ram/mobo instead

CPU I listed is 4c/8 threads
CPU you listed is 4c/4 threads

I would opt for the CPU I listed as well. Might save you from upgrading sooner rather than later

To be clear, nothing wrong with those parts if you can't justify the extra $ in the build I did. I'd highly recommend it if you can swing it though it's worth it :)

new board,cpu, ram ~> https://pcpartpicker.com/list/w2BY7h

new board and ram upgrade ~> https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DxX72R

IMO: just opt for the new board and ram upgrade, and start saving more for a new gaming rig. unless that rig runs fine for you? what games do you play on it? does it lag in use / in the applications you use it for?

It's fine for games like league of legends and world of warcraft, which are a large part of what I do, but for some reason Path of Exile for example has pretty bad performance. I haven't actually tried newer AAA games unfortunately, which is a shame because that means I never really tested my systems limits so to speak, but I'm pretty sure those games would run, but on low graphics and with mediocre to bad FPS.

I was actually looking at that kit of RAM but I think PCPartpicker isn't up to date on it's price or something, it seems to be about $227 right now >_> Ram used to be so cheap I thought... feels awful right now looking at prices.

By the way, would you guys happen to know of a good CPU fan, because heat is definitely an issue for me D:

Is this a good board to use / a good deal?

Looking to pick up a ryzen 5 of some sort, a board and trying to find a reasonable price on RAM at this point. I've goten about 6 different PCPartpicker lists from various people already, and I've been doing my best to compare and contrast the Motherboards and RAM choices. In the process I spotted this deal, so figured I might as well ask about it.

These are the 6 different lists for those interested in chiming in:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DTX7BP - Ghot's list
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/w2BY7h - Canadian_born's list
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/BT8CVY - penguin's list
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/N9BvHN - redditor #1's list
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/WQMHVY - redditor #2's list
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cN7xJV - redditor #3's list

What's awesome about these lists is everyone's basically on the same page that I should replace 3 things only, my Mobo / CPU / RAM, basically no one suggested any other replacements. Everyone also has been in the same boat in regards to me getting a Ryzen, a B350 Mobo and 8-16 GB Ram. If nothing else that's reassuring that my path is pretty clear, it's just about picking the right components.

I guess I'm just curious if I should be hunting for sales on similar parts, or if the specific suggested parts in your lists were singled out due to them being particularly stand out components quality wise etc?

If I just sit in buildapcsales reddit for a few days and hunt down deals, would that be ideal, or should I be following a pcpartpicker list exactly? Alternatively, are there any other good places to find deals on parts?
