I have been doing some research in preparation to build a desktop gaming rig, and I can't seem to find any reliable information on which graphics card will produce enough power for flawless 1080p gaming.

So far the impression I am getting is I need something in the range of a GTX 970 to a GTX 1070.

Basically, I need a card that will allow me to run nearly any game at max settings at a constant 60+ fps at 1080p? But how much is overkill? If I don't need the extra power it would be nice to save some money.

I am pretty sure most everything in the 10 series is overkill, but I am also curious if it is worth investing in a more powerful card for future game releases.

Is the 980 card overkill? Is the 970 powerful enough power to do what I require? Looking for advice on this subject from someone experienced.

Thanks.

google benchmarks.

all that matters is the games you plan to play, if your aim is to future proof get a 1080/1080ti.

Thanks for the replies.

I've looked at benchmarks quite a bit, you are certainly right about the game being a factor, seems some of the newer games aren't optimised very well and are pretty demanding.

Every source I could find was telling me that even some higher end series 9 cards are able to do 1080 gaming with no issues. I think the direction of the newer cards is towards those wanting to do 1440 or 4k.

Nevertheless I'm leaning towards the 1070. It seems like the best value of the options, and I think it should be more than powerful enough for what I need

I did just look up some benchmarks for a 980 ti, I was impressed. It seems the cards are pretty well matched which I wasn't expecting. Any reason why the 980 ti has a larger price tag?

Tf are you guys telling him to get a 980TI for 1080P 60hz.

Rx 480 or a gtx 1060 would crush 1080P even at 144hz in competetive games and 60+ high/ultra in AAA titles
