Okay so looking into building a small pc I can travel with. I constantly travel 4 hours to visit family, and make sporadic 8-10 hour drives to other states. Have a 450w inverter in my truck and was thinking I could place it under my back seats. Run a like 12' mini hdmi cable under my trim panels and up through the center consol. Plan on buying a semi cheap 10-11" tablet as a monitor. For offline games unless we stop at a Hotspot or get to the destination.
I didn't include the razer turret in the part picker. Nor tablet as I don't know which tablet I want to get.

For this build I would favor an i3. I5 seems like overkill for a 1050 ti portable build.

but its up to you.

From your post, it seems like you intend to game on the vehicle. Desktop computers, don't travel well. Video cards come loose, as does RAM and CPU coolers...from all the bumps in the road.
I would suggest one of these, as Yup mentioned...

/e By the time you get the turret and the tablet...it will cost at least as much as these gaming laptops do.

Huh? How could stuff like RAM with tabs that have you have to apply direct force to come lose? Same goes for something like a AIO that is screwed into the mobo?

Motherboard is mounted flat and GPU vertical. Not much space for anything to move around.

Well, when you've transported a few desktop computers, for distances that the OP is talking about, your view may change. :)

/e I'm not talking about parts "falling out" ...just breaking electrical contact, even briefly.

/ee Even if the GPU for instance, doesn't break contact... eventually you will damage the PCIe slot, due to the weight of the vid card.

I know a guy that uses that exact case for a midrange VR build that he drives around doing Vive and Rift demos with. Said he's never had problems.

Thanks boss I'll definitely look into an i3. I've only ever used i5 and i7 so wasn't sure if the i3 would keep up with virtual machines and photoshop too well but I'll definitely keep it in mind and look more into it when I'm off work.

I already have a Lenovo y510p sli laptop. I hate the heat from laptops as well as the weight being on my lap for long periods of time where as with my project idea I could toss the turret and tablet in the center console and pull it out when needed. Also with me using virtual computers and photoshop my laptop is constantly running full fan speed and getting quite warm and semi noisy.
Also I will add I am just biased to desktops overall. The upgradability and such is alot more enjoyable to me.

I completely understand what you're saying brother. However In reply to that, the gpu will be supported. The 2 extra fans in the parts list will go under the gpu to assist in air to the card, which leaves a 0.25-0.5 inch gap between the fans and gpu. I plan on placing a dense rubber spacer in between the fans and gpu and connecting the spacers to the fan screws. I know this isn't completely Immobilizing the gpu, but it won't just be free floating. With that being said I transport my current 980ti/5820k full tower build a minimum of 8 hours every weekend and the graphics card isn't supported at all and never had a problem. Just made a 9 hour drive to Oklahoma city and 9 hours back as well with no problems. Only difference is my full tower wasn't turned on ofcourse. Under my rear seat I've had an Xbox/PS wired to my head unit screen for over a year and never ran into an issue. Combined they've easily seen 35-40k miles haha.
Worst case scenario even if the pcie slot does get damaged, microcenter has 2 year no questions warranty so it won't hurt me to go swap out mobos :p

Actually funny you mention this. I got the idea of the node 202 from another forum where a guy built a portable VR rig that he traveled and took it to electronic shows and demoed it and stuff. He mentioned it was always getting tossed around (obviously not literally tossed lol). Made me think hmm I could build a small enough desktop to eliminate the need of a console (since I can use a game controller on the pc to play console games) as well as eliminate the need to carry my full tower since I can do my work as well as game with it when I touch down somewhere haha.

Good luck.

They made laptops for a reason bro.

And I have a very nice laptop and still never use it. Paid like $1500 for it and put maybe 75-100 hours in on it in the last year.
ZzZzZz you sure pick and choose what you want to read eh?
I have many personal reasons for not wanting to go the laptop route.
Hot exhaust on my legs.
Noisy fans when everything is getting taxed.
Uncomfortable weight for long periods of time.
Minimal upgrading choices which require to buy a whole new system.
Increased difficulty of swapping out parts if anything ever did fail.
No customizability.
Like 25% the speed of an equivalent priced desktop when it comes to an all purpose unit running both games and cpu intensive applications.
I could go on.

This thread is NOT about whether I should use a desktop or laptop and it's not about whether I should or shouldn't build a portable system. I am sure my computers/consoles have seen more road miles than 95% of the people who have traveled with their rigs. I am perfectly comfortable in driving with my pc. Fact of the matter is if I don't build this 800$ rig, then I'm risking a 3000$ rig. Pick your poison.

Edit: but thank you for your insight.
