Card - MSI Twin Frozr iii 7970 3 GB

Chip - Intel 2500k Gentle Overclock to 4.0 ( using stock cooler )

MSI P67A-GD65 (B3) Board

Ram is 8 GB of Vengeance 1600 mhz ( 2 x 4 GB sticks )

psu - corsair 850w HX Gold

2 x 240 GB SSDs Samsung 850 Evos

performance isnt great in newer games....and if I max everything in Rome Total War 2 it bogs down as well.....but for the most part this system is usable

considering waiting for next gen stuff but unsure....

the longest I would be willing to wait is Q3 2017, the quickest I'd be buying is boxing day/new years this year

Any thoughts?

Upgrade the CPU cooler...now. Then you can get a better overclock.
Upgrade the vid card as well. GTX 1070 or 1080.

Then, you can wait till you WANT to upgrade further.

Like a Corsair H100i GTX.

As for the performance difference between a 7970 and a GTX 1070...

I agree with Ghot.
Just a gtx 1070 and a h110i/h110i gt/h115i which cooler depends on price.

The gtx 1070 shouldn't be bottlenecked by a 4.5ghz 2500k. But yeah it would be wise to upgrade to the upcoming generation. Either kaby lake or amd zen. I'm 90% sure the cooler will fit the upcoming sockets. Or you would most likely be able to buy a new bracket cheap to fit.

What case do you have currently?

With the new generation I mean cpu + motherboard + RAM. No reason to get a new psu and ssd for quite some time.

I have an nzxt phantom 410 in black as my case.

Its a mid

Any recommendations on gtx 1070?

I am comfortable overclocking my cpu but have little to no experience overclocking a gpu

I don't know that I agree with others due to the game you're talking about playing.
I would probably jump to skylake and get something like a 480/1060.

Total war is really cpu hungry, so i think this would be a better option. I don't think you'll gain much in the way of CPU by waiting, primarily because of Intels new approach to processors...so we should now see 3 branches of processors per Mobo socket, which Imo means slower gains, but also that if they do get a huge gain, you'll should be able to upgrade/sell old more easily than now (since you need mobo/ram/cpu.)

New graphics will be out by that time you quoted, but that can always be said, as graphics continue to rapidly advance (faster and more significantly than processors that is, in terms of gaming)
So this is what I would do in your position, provided you do not want an i7 (which wont help you for just gaming, particularly this one)

480

1060

edit: in conclusion i dont think you have any reason to wait, as we are not really in any significant reasons to do so. ^_^

Kinda disagree. Total War Rome II on a 2500k should should run maxed out 1080p 60+ fps

Pascal and Polaris is quite new. and shouldn't be out before end 2017.

AMD Zen And Intel Kaby lake should be early 2017, I would have waited for that release for sure.

GTX 1070 now, new gen CPU chipsets in like 2-months.

Well I disagreed with all of you guys, so it logically follows that you disagree with my point :p

I do not think Kaby or Zen will bring significant enough changes to wait for them outright if he is wanting to upgrade now.
This unfortunately is just going to be up to him on whether he wants to do 1 upgrade or 2 and wants to deal with doing more research/coming back here once the chips finally launch.

So the way I see it, upgrading now and later have pretty much the same effect as far as his computer is concerned. But this way he gets fairly instant gratification.
