my old 5770 only required a 6-pin connector off my psu
my brother had a 7970 ghz edition sitting in his closet that he sent me, which i'd like to use
my power supply just has a 6+2 (8) pin connector and a 6-pin, and this 7970 requires 2x 8-pin
they sell 6 to 8-pin adapters, but i'm wondering if anyone has used these and if they are a safe way to go
i don't want to jack up his card and then not be able to use it or return it to him

What is make and model of power supply?

antec 650 earthwatts 80plus certified
i went ahead and plugged the thing in with just the 8 (6+2) and the 6 connectors and it seems to be working okay
but that means i can't push it too hard right? because it's receiving 225 watts rather than 300 or something?

I think I would be more comfortable getting an adapter like this

going from 6 to 8 pin I can't say for sure but I would assume you are losing some power.. and you don't want to provide components less power than they need.

I haven't used either type of adapter, but if I had to I would go this route personally.

thought about it for a sec and realized adapter isn't going to increase the power delivered. still only going to be 75 watts through the 6 pin array. so i'm guessing extra 2 pins on adapter are probably additional grounds? lol

running games etc fine on the 225w i'm supplying, and since nothing i do taxes my system much, think i'll just roll with it. /shrug

If i remember correctly the 2 extra pins are grounds

I highly doubt that, The extra 2 pins add like 80w? More power.



@OP Just get a 6 -> 8 pin adapter, It will work 100% fine.. Just don't overclock the card.

Think a few on ocn used adapter and ocd Think it depends on 12v rail amps

I wouldn't use ANY kind of adapter on the vid card power leads. I've seen too many ppl have issues with this...

With a proper PSU it's fine.

The Pci-E & 6/8 pins can actually put out a decent amount of power more than they list. My custom 980 bios adds like another 180w~ Between the 3.
