Responses to my post about a ram upgrade tell me its time to start fresh.

Budget: 600-1000 CDN (cheaper is better)

More specific use: sc2, wow, d3, PoE is the most intensive game for now, otherwise just browsing/ word processing.
Im not someone who wants to run the newest game on max.

Planned time until purchase: Can purchase now, or i can wait until sales, (or purchase good sales now and wait for other sales)

Do you need an Operating System?: No, Im sure i can find myself one :rolleyes:

, recommendations on which on to find though? Im on vista skinned to look like xp atm, my mom has 8 and i HATE it

Do you have any specific preferred components?: Nope

Do you need a sound or wireless card?: Will I need them in addition to what comes integrated? Computer is hard-wired to internet, 5.1 or 7.1 capability would be nice but not required

Do you want stock cooling or do you plan on overclocking?: Not overclocking, but last build fried a card (prebuilt) and the one in it now is running too hot. Would like this build to be both cooler and quieter than my old comp

Do you need a monitor? mouse? keyboard?: No.

Old build has a newish 120gb SSD I use as my boot, Probably need a new HDD though 500-1tb will be plenty
e/ Could probably keep my PSU as well actually Will check its stats when home but i think its 600 or 650 corsair.

Old build: doubt anything else is salvageable sadly.

e/ Can i take my audio card/ tv tuner/ network card from here?
or are they all crap/ cheap to replace (would not get tv tuner again ofc)

All your hard drives are salvageable, you can also keep your tuner cards and stuff provided they just use PCI slots.

But we can start looking at something like this...

If you want something more silent, would opt in for a 30 dollar after market cooler. It will be quieter and make your cpu run cooler.

I chose a 960 only because You didn't list your budget so I don't know if you need a stronger card and you stressed cheaper was better.
Case is up to you but that is a good one. Let me know if you are thinking of different parts or have questions about any of my picks! I kept your budget in mind and know they charge tax/shipping a lot in canada so i shot low, overall.

edit: this is the cooler, did not include it in build because you don't need it, but is a very nice thing to have

1. The card will take up 2 slots, but it wont take up 2 pcie 16 slots. on that board it goes Pcie, pcie x16, pcie, pcie x16.
So if you put it in the top pcie x16, youll block off a Pcie x1, if you put in the bottom youll block off just a pcie.

2. The card is a good mid range card. Its in one of the best price/performance slots, I would argue. You can compare cards here.

The 960 is not on that list, but for comparison purposes use an AMD 285 or a 280 as they are about the same [similar enough for comparison purposes]
Otherwise the next lowest value card Id suggest looks to be a 360.

For comparison sake its about the same as an R9 265/270 which are some of my favorite value cards. [theyre just not cheaper than the 360 atm, which is a re-release of those cards with a new name]
Ignore the OC thing, it simply means they have a factory overclock on it, you can still tune it as much as you desire, but it will be already closer to the maximum you can push it.

3. No disadvantage. i chose black because of looks. For gaming and most things ram speed wont matter. Pick what is cheap and looks best to you
Just also be sure it comes with a good warranty. a lot of ram standard nowadays has a lifetime warranty or a very long one. [that kingston has lifetime]

4. I dont know about deal hunting in canada [so i dont know what is a normal sale price for the parts i picked] so unfortunately i cant help there. You can choose to wait if you want, but in my experience it's usually not worth it to wait.
The only exception is if you are using a deal hunting site and are not looking for specific parts and are really savvy with your prices so you know when to pounce.

But i forgot some!

If anything i was asking about moving up in cards so i will stick with your recommendation if you think its good value!

Does the case come with an exhaust fan?
and if i buy the after market CPU cooler will i be voiding my CPU's warranty? (does that matter?)

I Will buy the ones with discounts or shipping after making sure my PSU is what i think it is

6300 is a good cpu, but it's even known for gg overclocking. Since ur not OCing, you won't be benefiting as much from it.

4460 + 960 will give you better performance, esp. on the games you listed vs non OC 6300 + 960.
can also just stick with a intel stock cooler, it'll be more quiet than ur current ancient build.
AMD stock fans are loud though, so u'd want aftermarket cooler if noise is an issue.

ram 1866 is better, just a good deal atm. is why it's cheap

Os doesnt matter atm, cuz 10 is coming out soon. so get 7/8 whichever is cheaper

1. Ah moving up gets really expensive because you're moving into enthusiast cards.
You'd be looking at an AMD 290 [$375], 390 [$430ish] or an Nvidia 970 [$386]. 970 and 290 are very similar performancewise, but the 290 puts out more heat. generally speaking 970 is a better deal if its competitively priced as I see it is atm in canada.

2. After market coolers do not affect warranty on cpu.

3. Yes the 200r has an exhaust fan

The per core performance of intel is better, so it will really out-perform the AMD in terms of gaming. But the gains are pretty small for the price you pay. You can also really easily overclock your 6300 with an evo to about 4.0 to 4.2 ghz and close that gap a bit. As someone whos had both an 8320 rig and an 4690k rig, intel processor is definitely better but just not great value.

Windows 7 is often a gamer favorite, you can get it the free way or find a key on Microsoft softwareswap on reddit. the keys are about 20 bucks, as secksii mentioned though windows 10 is in like 8 days so dont stress over it.

As for ram again, speeds/timings etc. dont affect gaming in normal situations [the exception is gaming on an APU]. dozens of test have shown. So just get whatever looks nice and is cheap

Is what i am now leaning towards

the Intel is just too much $ for what sounds like slim rewards given that I am not a performance fiend. Besides sounds like the cheaper solution is buying the Evo and OCing myself.

The last debates are OS and Case.

the comrade is 30$ cheaper and looks just as nice, or maybe nicer, but it looks like the 200R has rear and fr0nt fans pre-installed and the comrade i would need to purchase a front fan (if i need).

I know you say OS doesn't matter but I have been on a hacked Vista repack to look like XP, im very used to the old way

, I hate 8 so thats out of the question, 7 Is acceptable?

When will 10 realistically be any good if its released in 8 days wont it still be months before SP1 rolls out and fixes the flood of bugs first releases tend to have? / does 10 actually look good?

e/ Also thanks a bunch to both of you for all the help! think i will order at least the graphics card today since its promotion ends tmrw and you seem to agree on it for my price point
