wanting to get something that will look better / run better
currently running a nvidia gtx 750ti

looking at getting a 970?
400$ is my max price range ish

possibly this?
good / bad / better suggestion??

Yes
make sure you have the PSU to back it up thought (even though 970's are efficient)
as you said you have a 750ti

What other hardware are you running? Don't want to severely bottleneck the 970, it'd be a waste of money :(
