maybe 240x2, 785g mobo, 2x2gb ddr2 800 ram, antec earthwatts 430, 4850/4870, $50 hdd. used stuff aint bad if you can get it.. new ddr2 and other shit is kinda expensive atm

Well personally I'd rather have a 900$ system that can be upgraded later on than a 400$ system non upgradable making me spend 800$ for a new one. In longterm you save more.
But I found something quite cool about a notebook, the hp mini 311 is capable of running bf2142/mw2 on low at 25fps.

its very helpful if he has some sort of case, maybe a newer harddrive or optical that he can use

otherwise, mid-high dual core, 785g, 4gigs of either ddr2 or ddr3 you will need to check combos and see which comes out cheaper, use onboard graphics for the time being and then get like a 320gb hdd (anything lower isnt usually worth it, cost just as much after shipping, 320gb is ~2-3 more than a 250 so ya)

then like an EA430 antec PSU, if you HAVE to have a case, the antec 300/200 with a PSU bundle will be about $100, Ram/mobo/CPU is gonna be the big peice at probably around $250 and hdd at around $50, your still left needing an opt drive

this should give you decent RAM/ HDD/ power with the option to upgrade to a good selection of GFX and procs, the onboard GFX is pretty decent and 430w should handle up to a 5770

about $410

pretty good setup, as-is

you will definatly want another set of the 2x1gb ram sticks sometime soon tho

These:

you can also get the two hundred and basiq 500w to drop about $20

will drop your overall price below 400

with the two hundred and 500w basic, + 2x1gb more of the gskill ram, you hit $428, add $15 for shipping to any of the totals
