Not sure whats going on, but I bought this prebuilt a year ago and just today it restarted and gave me the "cpu overheating" warning then shut down.

Already reinstalled windows and its still happening.

that cpu shouldnt really be overheating unless you're running it at 500% all time time lol, are your case fans spinning? cpu fans? i'd get some thermal paste and take off the cpu cooler to see what's up. maybe they forgot to put some on (you'd need to go buy some paste for like $10), or the plastic removal tab wasn't removed (this is actually pretty common to see, sadly)

are you actually seeing a temp increase? i'm not familiar with that actual warning itself. if you download "HWINFO" you can run it and see your CPU temp live. with that cpu i'd be surprised to see it hitting 65-70 celcius under a decent sized load.

ex. run hw info, select 'sensors only' and look for your cpu

example of a company that forgot to remove the plastic on a pre-built, effectively murdering the cpu cooling capacity...

further edit: looking into your cpu cooler in specs, apparently that one is prone to complete failure.. if there is no plastic, and it is still doing the shutdowns, i'd replace the cpu cooler. it seems to not work consistently under loads which is a huge issue in itself.

basically any cpu cooler aftermarket would be better.

ex search: AM4 CPU Cooler
ex coolers to use:
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/hmtCmG/cooler-master-cpu-cooler-rr212e20pkr2
Noctua NH-U12S redux 70.75 CFM CPU Cooler https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/vV7G3C/noctua-nh-u12s-redux-7075-cfm-cpu-cooler-nh-u12s-redux
Noctua NH-L9a-AM4 https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/DZfhP6/noctua-nh-l9a-am4-3384-cfm-cpu-cooler-nh-l9a-am4

basically any thermal paste is fine, if you buy a noctua cpu cooler then it usually comes with some. pretty easy to install, watch a 10 min youtube video.

it also appears if you have a 3 year warranty this would be covered under warranty more than likely if you wanted to deal with these guys, but honestly it may take a LONG time to get resolved vs. buying this part and taking the other out and sacrificing like 2 hrs of your time

Wow thanks for this detailed response, I wasn't expecting this. I had a temp software before I reinstalled windows and it showed the ryzen in red at like 98c. Even during a disc cleanup it shut down due to overheating.

I'll rip the cooler off and replace it anyway, I also read that this cooler was really susceptible to failures.

np, i also added this while you were replying just in case you didn't see

if you need any help with the cpu cooler tear out/reinstall feel free to dm me and i'll help you out if you are the least bit worried about anything. main thing is just unplug the pc, work on something that isn't carpet, and hit the power button once unplugged from the wall to drain the capacitors before you work on it

Thanks bub! I built one a while ago so I should be okay with the swap out.

I installed that hwin monitor and it looks like this on idle:

I really don't know how to use the program too much, but red doesn't seem right. :/

Do you know if I'll have to take the motherboard completely off the case to put a new cooler on?

generally speaking you wouldn't, most CPU coolers these days utilize the backing plate of the factory board. but when you take off the screws for your cpu cooler the back plate will free up, so best to do it on its side, while holding the backing plate when taking off the last screw.

there are some exceptions but i'm assuming that this cpu cooler will be the same as like 80% of cpu coolers these days

Yeh, you're right, I just popped off the right panel and the cpu socket is visible with the bracket too.

Okay, and you think the 212 evo will fit okay with what I have?
