Hey,

Can't decide which one to choose

I'll have ryzen 7 2700 + gtx 1060 6Go oc
want to pick a VA monitor, 24"

Will I really see a difference in everyday gaming (mostly RPG game, and sometimes some FPS), or any XX monitor will do the job ?
Is ghosting really a problem on VA monitors ?

Don't have anything to compare at home, playing from a 15" laptop since years !

thx for your input

144hz you will see it more in fps games but you can notice it at all times a little tbh.
Ghosting can be bad in cheap VA panels, so lesson is don't be cheap.

actually, i'll buy a cheap VA, 60 hz ~ 120€ or 144 hz ~200€

so if ghosting if that much annoying, i will loose benefits to have 144hz ? Then i'd better go with 60hz ?

Remember refresh rate on monitors directly correlates with active fps from your pc, at least in terms of what we see. So essentially, unless your computer can consistently run near, at, or above 144 fps for your favorite games - there’s no point in upgrading yet.

If you can run those higher frame rates successfully, then absolutely 144hz is worth the money. I will never go back to 60hz.

But if your pc runs COD at 60-80fpsfor example, I’d recommend saving your money for now and going with a 60hz monitor. That way you can be “locked” at 60hz, creating a smooth viewing experience with no tearing no chopping - things you could encounter when spiking between 60-110-80-144 if your computer is struggling to the 144+ fps mark on a 144hz monitor.

Hope this helps provide some context. Compare the scope of your pc’s power with your budget. :D

But in addition to this, to answer your question of how much of a difference it is ? Yes, you really will notice the difference, 144hz is incredible. 60hz makes my brain lag no joke. But you’ve got to have the pc horsepower behind it to consistently keep those frames up for a smooth experience. Optimally you “cap” at 144. That means my pc might be floating around 180-220 fps on csgo, but the effective fps I can see due to the monitors refresh rate is only 144. So we are LOCKED at 144 holding steady. A good, smooth, experience.

I've read that g-sync/free-sync is really helping here ?

I can lower a bit, for example, not playing 100% ultra high quality texture, if that allows me to gain some fps

And, i may have not been clear, this is not an upgrade, as i don't have any monitor yet, so i'm still stuck with my laptop
So i'll have to buy a monitor, 144hz or not ! :)

Right

And also, buying a 144 now would give you some longevity build-wise. It can be smart to go for future proof choices sometimes, things that will still be useable down the road if you upgrade other parts of your system. And if you get a high quality monitor now, it'll be worth the investment long term, and your system will never bottleneck because of your monitor!

People often overlook the monitor. Especially if you're an FPS player, those frames matter

I actually spent close to 25-30% of my entire PC's budget on my monitor and I love it. I've got an ASUS 1920x1080 144hz 1ms with V-Sync. Love it. Was just under $300 when I got it awhile back.

yeah, you'r right, i should forget 60hz then !

Actually, i bought my PC for...200€ (used ofc, but definitely a very nice deal, and all component <1year so still covered by warranty) . So i let you do the maths for 25-30% of budget for monitor ahah !

as for some other component, monitor prices has drastically decreased in last 2 years. That's why i thought 200€ for monitor with freesync and 144hz VA should be OK nowadays. But i'm kind of afraid with this ghosting, don't want to buy monitor that is really ugly and unplayable because of this
