Disable windows auto driver assign.
Reinstall drivers from manufacturer website.
Post back results and list hardware if it doesn't help.

I've had sound card driver problems before, but usually fixed by easy steps that I've already tried.

Uninstalled/reinstalled - not fixed
Update drivers

Not sure what the problem could be.

I did the first part of your instruction, I uninstalled and reinstalled but still didn't fix

How do I get more info for hardware,

The name of the driver is Realtek High Definition Audio

I'm plugging in a speaker through headphone port and I am pretty sure the port is working fine.

The sound controller seems to not be working for some unknown reason.

Did you disable windows auto assign driver options?
If not Google how. Then redo drivers....

Download and run specy for hardware info...
We need the model numbers or hardware id's for the audio card.

1. Choose Device Manager
2. Right click the Realtek driver and choose: Properties
3. Choose the Details tab
4. In the drop down box choose: Hardware IDs

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0889&SUBSYS_10438418

Here are the hardware id

Yes, I disabled windows auto assign driver options

I'm not getting sound yet, but below tells me it's not a port problem, more an underlying issue.

NOTHING plugged in

SPEAKER Plugged in through headphone port of PC (NOTE: The 'front panel' light pops on when plugged in the headphone port in front of course.)

Please need help, can't go through life with no sound on my PC

Any other info needed? Any other tips on how to solve sound issues?

By download and run specy I'm guessing you mean Speccy for system specs, will post those soon.

MY sound device is built into the motherboard - not sure if that is relevant information.
