I bought a used “gaming” computer, I’ve had it for about 5 days and this is the first time I’ve heard these noises. Every 1-5 mins it makes a slight whirring/scratching noise. Kind of like the old loading noises from the early 90s. I’ve shut down the computer, and it hasn’t made these sounds before. What could be going on?

Could be something to do with a fan.
Could be a hard drive starting to die (not an SSD).

I’ll do it tomorrow night if it does it again, I turned off the power bar, and it seems to have stopped

Yes. HDD stands for hard drive.

Hard drives will make whirring/scratching noises as they die.

There are only two things in a computer (besides a rodent) that can even make whirring/scratching noises. Those would be hard drive(s) or fans.

There is a program called CrystalDiskInfo (free) and found here: https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/

Just run the program and select your non-SSD drive and at top left of program look for it to say Good, which means that at the moment your hard drive is good.

On a side note... IF your computer has an optical drive (CD or DVD) and you forgot and left a disc in there...it might also sound like a whirring or scratching noise.

k, if it sounds like any of these its probably the 500gb hd.

Otherwise its most likely a fan, could be cpu/gpu/psu or case fan.

Turns out the noise is coming from my router, is that a cause for concern? I don’t hear the sound during the day though?
