How do you balance the following options in order of importance when considering a monitor?

Or, alternately, what are the minimum specs you'll accept vs. your preferred specs?

It might help to clarify how you would use your monitor.

https://pcpartpicker.com/products/monitor/

Screen Size
Aspect Ratio (16:9, 21:9, 32:9)
Resolution (1080p, 2k, 4k)
Refresh Rate (60hz - 240 hz)
Response Time (1 - 5+ ms)
Panel Type (IPS, VA, other)
Curved screen vs. flat panel
Frame Sync (G-Sync, FreeSync, FreeSync 2, none)
Aesthetics/Appearance
Consumer Reviews
Price
Other Specs

Balancing these options was the hardest part when I built my PC awhile back, and I still wonder if I made the right choice.

it really depends what you use your monitor for.

i favored cheap and larger size over response and refresh. i do a lot more reading and comparing sites than i do gaming.
it is probably not the best thing i could be hooking my nintendo switch up to though with 60hz refresh and 5ms response.

Yeah, if you're doing any kind of gaming on it, even low-end stuff, I'd probably budget for like 120 hz. Even something as basic as moving your cursor across the screen looks nicer.

But if you only rarely play games on it, then it only rarely matters ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I wish there was a decent PC parts place where I live (I'd have to drive like 90 minutes 1-way). I'd like to see the difference first-hand if I could. I'd like to see how different 240 hz looks from 60, 144, etc.

Ok so you don't game, maybe you watch movies/shows and want better colour accuracy so you go IPS.
Or your into video editing trips for the family and you want to work on 4k content so you go 4kres.
Possibly your a freelance photographer so you go with a dell ultrasharp.
Maybe you need ergonomics and flexibility in your screen so you go for something like a EIZO FlexScan.

Idk how many more examples I can give.

you forgot to mention color bit.. there is a huge difference between 6bit + FRC display vs 10bit color display

also there is different types of ips panels, some of them doesnt even look that great they just have better viewing angles

that is BS, monitor can be just as good or even better

only buy tv if u really want to use remote and apps - which is bad imo, better to hook up a pc and wireless mouse

I have a friend who watches movies and TV on his monitor.

He doesn't have people over very often, he lives alone, and he mostly plays games on it anyway. So he wouldn't get his value out of owning a TV, even a cheap one.

Oh true, I forgot about that.

Color is one of those things I neglected when buying a monitor. It's not something that can be discerned through internet research very effectively lol.
