I have an old system: i7 860 with p55 board, and a ssd as boot drive with High Sierra installed.

However, I want to buy a nvme ssd (using pcie bus) as a secondary drive for games like WoW. I’m aware that I need adapter. I already done the research. So there is no compatibility issue. My question is will the operating system on my boot drive slow down the read and write speed of the nvme ssd? For example, I load WoW from the nvme drive, will the maps load up at the speed of that nvme drive without the boot drive affecting it.

what would be the optimum setup for games?

Having nvme ssd as boot and storage for games?
Keeping my initial setup: sata ssd as boot, nvme ssd for games.

edit: nvme ssd will be using the pciex16 bus. But only 4 lanes will be active.

Should work like you want, wouldn't worry about your boot drive slowing you down.

You could easily mod your bios to support NVME SSD booting, not hard to implement, there's plenty of tutorials online.

yeah i heard of that but i risk bricking my board and only the samsung evo 950 pro support legacy boards but cost like $500. thank you for the support.
