i've been dinking around with the bios for some time. with asus suite III and manually in the bios.

during prior months, it was quite a bit cooler in this room. i was able to OC my cpu to 5.235 i believe was the number. with this setting i've passed the stress tests without issues. (cinebench being the most demanding, i am not using prime)

it's winter months now and my heat is constantly blowing. i currently have my pc... DIRECTLY OVER A HEAT VENT. lol i'll get to it.
anyway, my cpu is not able to perform these tests without hitting my max temp and resetting (currently 75c is my max)
i know i could take the max higher, but i'm not going to this year.

in short, my room temperature is affecting my cpu temps. even the idles are just over 30c now.
i'm curious if i should dial back my OC during these months? i doubt i'd be doing anything that really needs the cpu to work that hard, but i'd rather get some opinions about it, than doing nothing and finding my pc can't boot in the future.

Yes, seasons will definitely have an affect on your OC.

The difference is marginal, Id say 300 mhz in extreme summers. All of which truly don't mean much unless if your competitive benching or something.

no, tbh i have no reason to even OC currently outside of testing my purchase. the CPU at least...
that's why i was hesitant to dial back though. i am not rendering or doing much that would require my CPU to fall under load.

plus, 5.235 was already a dial back. the last suite III run, took me to 5.4 i believe. idk it was crazy and i took it down quick, was pumping 1.5v through DRAM if i remember correctly. i could immediately pick up stutter in the system even at bios.
still.. this current 5.235 cannot pass my stress tests as is.

i guess i should probably dial it back a bit more though huh?

This is what I did...

Probably the best thing to do would be pick an overclock speed, like 4.7Ghz and just use it year round.

i'm just being lazy about moving everything. this rabbit put a kink in my original layout. i now plan to mount this tower to the wall, which would get it away from the heat duct at least.
i'm using the thermaltake core p3 case, looking it over... it seems i have to pull my mobo to reach the mounting screws. since my gpu is on a shelf... i'll have to remove that as well before i can access the mobo. then i have to remove the aio kits.... lol it's just a pain in the ass that i'm procrastinating.

but ya i think you're right, i should probably turn it down a bit. i've gotten a few good months of purchase testing in, which was truly my aim in the beginning.

If you look in the BIOS there should be a place where you can SAVE current BIOS settings. They usually have like 8 SAVE slots. It's usually somewhere in the TOOLS tab...called something like Overclock Profiles.
That way you can tune your current overclock and save it as Profile 1. Then, dial it back to your everyday overclock and save as Profile 2... etc.

Then w/e you want you can just LOAD w/e profile you want. I have about 5 saved on my comp.

/e You can have a Profile for each season. :D

this actually leads me to a separate question that i'm having some troubles getting a straight-forward google answer.

i am adding 2x more 8gb RAM sticks. exact same sticks as the ones already installed.
would this make any profiles prior to installation of extra ram... obsolete?

i'd imagine i'd have to update xmp settings with the addition, but i'm not sure. i've pretty much let suite III take care of those settings up till now.

What motherboard?

/e I think it would depend on whether the XMP settings are tied to the channels or banks. If the XMP setting is just a generic setting, NOT tied to the different RAM channels, then you should be fine with an earlier profile.
