Now and at least for the foreseeable future it's still Intel/Nvidia.

No, because it's not yet up against Intel's new CPU.

/e And even up against Intel's current it can't really compete in gaming...

/e Now for productivity, TR2 is kicking a lot of ass.
As for vid cards. Nvidia pretty much always kicks AMD's ass.

/ee Btw, I'm an AMD CPU fan.

Oh AMD. How we have faith in you. Nvidia is so nice though. You can optimize games to your video card, etc.

AMD has better price per performance talking pure workload.
Intel still wins on better IPC and higher core clock. Hence why games have higher avg fps.

Doubt AMD gonna have anything close to Nvidia's upcoming high-end Turing lineup.

One things for sure, AMD has shaken up the CPU marked the last 1.5 year.

I also consider upgrading my server's Ryzen 1700 to an Threadripper 2.

I'm not a fan boy of any of these 3 brands. I do buy whatever is best for the specific usage I have.
Thats why I have a mix of all these products.
Ryzen 1700 + RX480 in the editing system.
Ryzen 1700 + gt 1030 for the server.
4790k + 2x GTX 970 for the gaming system (recently sold, getting ready for the next build) I'm aiming for an i9-9900k when it arrives (even tho I feel buttfucked by the 14nm+++++.

Since gaming is still only dependent on up to 4 cores in the vast majority of cases, Intel is still better due to higher IPC and clock speed across the board. However, dollar for dollar, AMD is better for productivity. It's even been showing in commercial sales (the EPYC lineup of server processors from AMD is taking sales from Intel)
Ex: You can pick up a 12 core Threadripper for less than half the price of the 10 core i9, and it still has higher clock speed. Even the 16 core Threadripper is still cheaper than the 10 core i9.

They should make them bigger so heat distribution is better and maybe you can overclock more. I don't know.
