omg it stopped working again..
could it be something i've installed? i don't get it
It probably did Windows Update again. IF it's a USB mic, make sure it's not breaking connection somehow. Try another USB port. They don't have this problem usually. But I do have one USB connector on my case, that won't make contact if it's all the way in. I can pull it out like 1mm and then it will make connection.
The only other thing I can think of is the mic jack. IF it's 3.5mm, they have a tendency to get "sprung" over time. To test that tyry using your mic for something local, and very gently wiggling the mic connector in the jack.
I had a couple motherboards, back in the day, that would do that to my speaker connection. Once I found the proper position where it again made contact, I would stick a tiny piece of folded paper in there to hold it in place.
It was hard to find, because it would be working and then, just my walking around the room, would make it come loose.
If you can determine that it's not just the connection, then I would go back to blaming Windows Update. Windows Updates have been notorious for messing with or corrupting drivers, over the years.
With a Windows version like 8.1 or earlier, we were able to shut off auto updates, and could wait to see, if the problem was caused by the update or not.
Another way to test would be to re-install Windows, and leave the internet unhooked, for a couple hours, and check if the mic keeps working. The allow the rehook the computer to the internet. If the mic shortly goes off again, then you will KNOW it's Windows Update.
