Right now I'm in the market for a laptop, mainly for college (homework, netflix, web-browsing) use. I really do not know what I'm looking for (SSD vs. Harddrive, 4GB memory vs. 8-16GB, etc), especially with my price range (around $1,000)
Any advice and/or input much appreciated.

Cheers

Anything 64 bit, at least dual core, and 4+ gb ram. Install Linux and it will be significantly faster than Windoze. Personally I use Mint for my school laptop. If you have to use actual software for homework (CAD, Photoshop, ETC), that's a different story.

I would recommend something like Asus Zenbook UX331UN.
Just the i5 quad core version with 8GB RAM.
It's only 2.5LBs and even has a small dedicated GPU.

But honestly go for an i5/i7 gen.8 with 8GB RAM. And 250GB+ SSD.
You can get these specs pretty cheap. But you pay for build materials, weight, size and features.

go future proof and take a dell xps 13. battery lasts for the whole college day and its easily potent enough for your tasks. build quality is high and very durable.

if you are a tough guy you could even take the 15 but its bigger and heavier and may not fit random eastpack/dakine/whatevercoolkidswearasabagpack

Sadly it's 1200$. No USB-A so you kinda need an adapter hub.
I currently have a fairly new Dell XPS 15, to be honest I'm not a fan of the design. I'm going to sell it soon and get a 13-14" (waiting for Huawei Matebook X Pro)

But yeah surely one of the most well-built laptops on my marked.

never understood why people need external devices on a notebook. i personally use the trackpad which is very good on the xps and the keyboard and screen are good as well. if you really need a mouse you can still go bluetooth tho ^^

didnt know its that high price in usa. in germany its flat 1k for the basic 9360

The basic 9360 version, isn't that costly... http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/xps-13/spd/xps-13-9360-laptop/fncwt5128s

Even the 9370 version is only $999... http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/xps-13/spd/xps-13-9370-laptop/dncwy601h

I prefer using the same good quality mice on both desktop PC and Laptop. Also all my USB thumb drives are USB-A as well.
I use both my USB-A on my XPS 15 daily.

Would be pretty stupid to buy the duo-core 9360 right now.

And the 9370 at 999$ is only 4GB RAM.

I'm not recommending them. I just agreed with POL1Z1STENS0HN, that they aren't over $1000.
I pretty much said that as well. LOL
