Hey all, I am in need of some wiring help. My isp recently let me upgrade my dsl service, but this requires a bonded line. They just replaced the line from the pole to my nid on the outside of my house.

My ask is this. I need to rip out the old 4 wire phone line from the nid to my rj11 phone jack near the modem, and replace with cat5. I am looking for a wiring diagram or advice as to how I connect the cat5 cable to the rj11 outlet. I'll let the tech connect it at the nid if I can't figure it out.

Thoughts or advice? From what I've googled, it looks like the orange/orange white and blue/blue white are used, but I don't see anything confirming which poles I hook them to on the phone jack baseplate.

Thanks for your time!

More info

I have orange/orange white and blue/blue white coming from the nid. The rj11 phone jack has 4 posts, green black yellow red. I'm not sure how to connect the cat5 to the respective posts on the rj11.

Why are you using the phone jack?

You realize you can just buy an Rj45 jack, right?

My modem needs an input from a rj11 phone line sadly. I love how you posted a wall plate mount. This doesn't help with the actual wiring. On a plus side, if I actually needed this, they could deliver it to me by Monday.

Well, this is the pinout...

Notice the colors of the wires at the bottom of diagram.

wht-ora goes to black
blu-wht goes to red
wht-blu goes to green
ora-wht goes to yellow

/e Yeah your phone line is red-green and blk-yellow. Those are the two telco pairs.

Like put the black telco wire and the wht-ora CAT5 wire on one screw.
Put the red telco and the blu-wht on another screw.
Put green telco and wht-blu on another screw
Put yellow telco and ora-wht on the last screw.

Just coil up the leftover CAT5e wires and store in the wall jack, or cut off.

Then just use a telco wire from the wall jack to the modem?

Hell, if ya wanna get really red-neck about it, you could just wire the telco line and the CAT5e together and don't even use the wall jack. :D

/ee In the old days the telephone company (telco) used to use just solid colors, for the tip and ring pairs. But they soon realized that this wouldn't be enough colors.
So they came up with the much larger color code that we use today, like blu-wht/wht-blu etc.

By way of an example...

I've got it wired how you and others have suggested and still have no external internet. Gonna let the tech lackey sort it out, starting to think they wired something wrong on the pole.

Appreciate your help!

They probably don't have it in the DSL port on the nid. You have a dedicated jack now so it must be there. Or yes they fucked up and put you on pots at co.

I worked installation and repair for years. Pretty common to not release DSL at the co.

Blue white should be in the DSL port at the nid. However you need a terminal wrench to get in.
