Well my wife's 5 years old laptop (Asus A56c series, i3 with small SSD+HDD, 4gb ram, integrated graphics) is having problems booting, and shuts down randomly...ran a chkdsk, a scannow, didnt find any issue but i'm 95% sure the SSD/HDD is failing.

Backed up all her stuff, but now im debating what to do. She barely uses it, but kinda need one. I think the smart thing would be to buy a new SSD and reinstall windows.

Can you guys point me to a cheap and reliable SSD? 256GB would be plenty. Thanks in advance.

Either of those work, you won't notice a difference spending more on a Samasung/Intel/WD SSD.
I would personally opt for the mushkin though.

if I manage to boot in windows again I will try it. I really wanna make sure the issue is or isnt the OS drive before buying another ofc.

Basically when I press the ON button, (power cord is plugged in), I see the Asus sign, then black screen. The other day after like 15 minutes I came back and it booted windows fine. So I backed everything up (it was working fine).

Yesterday my wife tried to boot it, it never worked, and ended up on a windows 10 advanced start up menu. I tried ''continue to windows'' and never booted.

I will try clearing the CMOS later this evening (http://www.tomsguide.com/answers/id-1801799/frozen-asus-start-screen.html)

Mushkin has a great warranty and I've never had issues with their drives (not saying it couldn't happen though)
The good thing with the mushkin is its the newer nand tech as well as being a new line so if you can't provide
proof of purchase it will go off the date they were being produced.

Well..I tried to reset windows 10 while keeping my personnal files..

Got a 0x0000021a STOP error, most likely linked with WINLOGON crashing..GREAT!

And now I dont see the windows Key sticker anywhere on the laptop. I would simply create a bootable windows 10CD and format....

maybe ill miraculously get windows to boot and then get the freaking key, get info for different drivers to reinstall after format and format the damned thing..

Then if its still not working then SSD time.

This love/hate relationship with computers is killing me

Well I deleted all partitions while reinstalling windows 10 via the USBtool. Installed windows on the HDD, I am pretty sure the 24GB SDD is dead. (this laptop was using an hybrid technology or something, 24gb+500gb)

When you pick the good windows edition, the windows activates itself automatically with the digital key. EZ

Works like a charm now. Yay. Money saving ftw
