Nice specs. My guess is a failing hard disk drive. I can't think of why it would fail/freeze otherwise.

Does it do it randomly all the time or only during certain events/programs?

un seated and re-seated RAM
Haven't had a freeze since last night.
GPU driver is up-to date

one could say its the Schroedinger effect its both broken and fixed atm.
It's implied in my eyes at least. Till in reoccurs that is.

I saw that but that's since last night which doesn't give much time for it to reoccur.

it hasn't frozen on me today yet. will update/bump if it freezes for more trouble shooting.

i know one time since i have built this PC - i had a problem with the CMOS battery, PC would not turn on no matter what i tried
then pulled the CMOS, drained power from system, put CMOS battery back in and it started right up

If you just pulled the CMOS battery and then put it back in, all you did was reset the BIOS to defaults.
If you replaced the CMOS battery with a new one, well, that's different.
