I don't understand why this whole event still exists.

It's just a "for fun" thing.

/e Think of it as a reason to party on Feb 2nd.

It's a really small town. Population about 5,000. It's largely an area for camping, (in the summer). I guess they wanted something to draw tourists in the winter.
