My desktop gets like 30 Mbps via wifi, whereas my laptop (when placed right next to my desktop) gets like 90 Mbps via wifi.

Might it be the wireless card I'm using? Or the drivers? Or the fact that the desktop is on the floor vs the laptop on the table above the floor? Or malware?

How might I test this issue to find the cause?

hardware if anything tbh.
interference shouldn't be the issue as there basically beside each other.
the router could also be prioritizing your laptop over the desktop which can be fixed via QoS.

Honestly, my wireless card is just over 10 years old. I should probably just replace it and see if it fixes things.

Even when every other device in the house is off, it's slow, so priority shouldn't be an issue.

Didn't even think of that. Figured dual-band wifi had been around longer than that.

It's funny, none of this mattered up until a month ago because I had DSL internet and downloaded at 85 kb/s lol. Now that I have cable I've found the bottleneck I guess.

Didn't know these existed lol. I'd probably rather just buy a card than use up more usb slots though. Less ugly, and my usbs seem to be failing one at a time lol :(

You can also look into power over Ethernet adapters
