hello, i realize my pc is outdated and fairly old. but is it possible to over clock?

currently using
win 7 64 bit
Intel(R) Core i5-4690k cpu @ 3.50GHz (4 CPUs)
8 gigs ram

i read online that i can use something called prime to stress test my pc and a temp program to see what it goes to

so without overclocking, on 100% load 4 cores all hit over 100C

how bad is that? and should i stray away from any type of over clock?

any info is helpful for me as i am not the best with computers, i just know all the information in on the web somewhere, thanks for everyones time.

if any more info is needed i can provide

Why do you want to overclock?

Running slow? Run better games?

Is your cpu fan cooled?

it is fan cooled, but mainly i want to speed up overall gameing. idk if i may have a hardware error, but for example. i installed a game called fortnite... i canot run the game without clipping images over "medium" quality. which i believe that my pc should be able to do better

edit

running 4 fans.

graphics card is MSI GTX 970 4g

Clipping sounds like it's a graphics card issue if it runs fine on low settings but choppy on medium or higher. 970 should be able to handle the game no problem though.

Have you checked ram usage while playing and cpu usage?

i have, i have 2x4gb ram sticks. which this may be the main source of the problem... when running fortnite or a simular game like GTA V i get topped out of all my "memory" running at 7600-7800MB used and 200-400mb memory available

can this be the bigger of my issue?

Well windows 10 idle running no games for me uses 3gb+ alone. Might just have to run the game on low or medium unless you can upgrade. I checked the specs for the game and i5 2.8 is recommended. Seek others input here, but I wouldn't recommend overclocking a fan cooled cpu. Also im pretty sure overheating on a cpu can cause a decrease in fps performance anyways.

You meet the recommended specs so not really sure why you are getting fps drops. Ram looks like the reason tho to me.

Get SPECCY here: http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download
...get the FREE version from the: Piriform Link
...Speccy is a really nice system hardware/temperature, information Utility.
...simply install it...and run the program...then post a screen shot of the main page of the program, when posting a problem/question on these forums.
