The sever at work runs on an e5520 processor. It powers the server and all virtual desktops. There’s usually about five virtual desktops at one time. The RAM is sufficient. Hard drive no idea.

Wondering what it’ll cost to upgrade for similar needs.

I don’t own the server. But damn it runs slow. I know the processor is old, but not sure how much faster in real life applications a newer server processor would run (for financial software, business tasks, etc).

I think the sever needs a faster hard drive setup, double the RAM to 64GB, and a new processor or dual processor setup. Needs a better graphics unit & I don’t even know what the graphics unit is.

Just trying to get a good idea of the cost of an upgrade (hardware, not the labor required), and how much an upgrade will help.

I want to work in a faster virtual desktop environment. Half of my time is spent waiting on the system, it’s laggy. We’re a professional firm.

I would check the resource utilization of the guests from the host machine to see what's maxing out before upgrading. Could very be an i/o or ram bottleneck. 5 machines isn't a lot, i doubt dual cpu's are needed, but one that isn't so old would probably still be a good idea. Nehalem is antiquated. What are the guest operating systems?

As slow as your bar speed during the 405 naked squat.

Most likely disk IO. Get SSD's in raid10 setup
