Hey guys,
So I've been building PCs for quite some time now and SSDs that used to go for 50-60 (and became a staple in my builds) have gone back up to 80 and have now become more of a luxury in my cheaper builds.

So I've been toying with the idea of using some 150-320 gb 7200 RPM Drives in raid, to create an SSD like experience for half or less of the cost in budget builds, especially since basically every cheap AM4 board supports raid.

What do you guys think?
I have only recently noticed that Am4's cheapest mobos support raid, so I'm not sure how viable this idea would have been before when using budget boards.

120gb ssds go for $20-$30 if you buy on ebay, I buy them all the time. Sometimes I even opt for two 60gb drives for $30 and throw them in raid 0.

raid 0 on platter drives will never be near ssd like experience, even if they were 15k rpm drives.

I have new builds that I warranty and used builds that I don't, so in this scenario, I'm trying to build the cheapest new and Warrantied PC :)

Sure I get that, but they won't be as bad as a standard 7200 rpm and I could feasibly throw together a 320gb raid setup for around 35 bucks, with warranty on some cheapo $60 AM4 board.

In any case, what do you guys think about a 35 dollar raid set up in a sub $600 build I am selling for profit?

dude

that's not his point, jesus christ. stop jumping to conclusions he obviously knows that.

he's prob just asking / wanting to discuss about it because he's got some old drives laying around doing it for hobby/fun/out of boredom.

...but he mentioned ssd's being too expensive so he's thinking of doing this instead... why bring up ssd's at all if relative performance to them is irrelevant?

because he's saying he wants to create an SSD experience.. this implies he already knows how fast they are compared to raided hard drives.. #post 3 offers nothing to the op

Well you can't create an ssd experience is my point.

since he asked for our thoughts I made it quite clear it can't be done.
if knew it then this shouldn't be a question.

You'd be better of getting a cheap raid card and raiding smaller 32gb m.2 drives on it.
Theres 32gb ssd's for like 8$ on ebay then the raid cards are like 20-30$.
