Is there some easy way to transfer files from a desktop to a laptop using some cable? not exactly sure how to do this?

You can put them both on the same network and map a drive.

Go to best buy and get a crossover cable...it'll have an RJ45 connector on each end.

Yeah but the wires on one end are reversed, so the two machines can talk to each other.

ok so its a special ethernet cable then? cause i already have a normal ethernet cable available.

and im going to try to transfer files from window system to a mac laptop. not sure if that matters much though

it's called a crossover cable. google it you'll see what i mean.

by sitching the wires on one end....the xmit wire on first device now goes to the receive wire on the other device... etc.

See, here is the normal pin out for an ethernet cable...






...and here is a crossover cable pin out. Notice how the ends are reversed. All the xmits on one end, now go to the rcv's on the other end and visa versa.

A cross over cable is not needed with Auto-MDIX.
Most gigabyte nic's these days have it.
