I got a new router that uses 5GHz and 2.4GHz frequencies concurrently (though I can choose one or the other).

My desktop wireless card is capable of connecting to both.

So my questions are:

1) should I continue running the two frequencies concurrently with the router?
2) which frequency should I connect to with devices that are capable of connecting to both?

Thanks.

connect to 5ghz if u can. neighbors nearby and many devices still connect to 2.4 ghz. so theres like less variety of channels to choose from within the 2.4ghz and more devices often connected. so better to not share a channel with other devices and such. so choose 5 ghz, i think it has a larger variety of channels to connect to and be separated. forgot the exact terminology but, usually 5 ghz is better.

A pretty decent distance. 30-40 feet as a very rough estimate? The router is on the ground floor and I am on the floor above it. At least 2 walls, possibly 3 depending on what's considered a wall.

Then go on 2.4

5 GHZ is meant for very small distances. It's faster yes, however shorter wave lengths passing thru walls makes it worse.

Thank you very much for the advice! I did run a speed test and the 2.4GHz is about 10Mbps faster.

Do you have any idea which is more stable, if either, or if there's any difference?

5ghz is better in pretty much every way, Other than distance & wall penetration.

5Ghz is faster but has poor wall penetration and doesnt handle long distances well. Thats pretty much about the differences you need to know.
