Right now I have just purchases an internet usb stick that has a limit of 20 GB. I was wondering if there is a way to set my computer settings to only use Internet on certain things. So that nothing is going on in the background or doing a big update.

Does anyone know if/how I can do this? 20 GB isn't that much and I don't want to be going any updates or have anything running in the background that is taking up internet.
I really just want to be able to use google chrome and a certain set of games with it.

first dont use windows 10
since microsoft using your bandwidth as if they own it with windows 10 is only able to be limited not completely stopped
disable windows update and related services in 7

alternatively operate on a hardware white list policy

You won't do updates unless you run into some entry point requirement which is rare then you just find the proper standalone KB if it happens and apply it yourself
This is what I do and I have a stable safe system that hasn't slowed down or had issues. My performance is same or more than windows 10 users with the same hardware

Security updates are no substitute for common sense, part of which is avoiding an OS which has so many back doors and holes users have no control over that data is leaked out of for Microsoft to profit from it looks like swiss cheese to anyone trying to exploit its vulnerabilities (which is why w10 needs a security update every 50 femtoseconds) if you want to get the absolute most out of 20gb of bandwidth which truly is destitute you need to avoid it

Though personally I only ran w7 with no updates after the gross forced upgrades cancer they pulled then lied saying it was an accident. That was when I realized they could no longer be trusted at all... nothing bandwidth or privacy related.

I don't know why you'd want to but yes. It's worth mentioning that w10 has a mode you can put it in that makes it aware you have limited bandwidth but that only goes so far, at 20gb I'd think you would want every mb you can get but look into it.

the truth of the matter is though you need to operate on a white list if you want total control over what uses your bandwidth, and that's a huge pain in the ass and doesn't stop being a pain in the ass until you stop using it.

Do you think I'd save a lot using "metered connection"?

On windows it says it will only update "necessary" updates, so I wonder how big those will be.

Need to block things with ur windows firewall or on the routers side.
Metered connections disables using ur network to update other people's machines.

You can't stop windows 10 updates only stall em.

Key is to disable loading of images on the browser and dint be streaming any video content.
