Current build:
i7 950
12gb ddr3 ram
gtx 960 4gb
X58A-UD3R Mobo
could use a new ssd, have a crucial m4 64gb(for windows lul)

needless to say, it's been years since i've really 'upgraded' anything. So help me with deciding what the most cost effective/performance guts are.

looking to stay intel/nvidia pls.

your ram is fine should keep that

I use 8gb and it's ddr3 I'd think 12gb to be the sweet spot

I can play the games I want to play, but every year I have this same set up I have to turn game settings down lower and lower to have consistently playable frames. I have had the same setup, except for upgrading from 6gb ram to 12 and changing the GPU multiple times, since 2011 iirc.

And okay. I wasn't sure when the next line was coming out for Intel. I don't spend as much time as I used to reading up on it.

I'm mostly concerned with upgrading the CPU/MOBO/RAM/SSD. I feel that overall that will have a huge impact on the overall performance.

Thanks for the advice.

edit: Thoughts on getting a second 960 4gb?

7700k may be a little too expensive for me at the moment. I'm looking at about $550.

ryzen 1600, 6c/12t for around $220
Almost or on par in terms of single thread to similarly priced intel offerings
completely obliterates them in multi threading, even beats the 7700k in that regard which costs over $100 more.

If you want to stay intel there's really no options that have reasonable price/performance right now, you'd best wait for them to make an answer for Ryzen which should come shortly. Coffee Lake is supposed to be good.

I may just wait in that case. It will give me more time to build a bigger budget.
