Currently have a Dell S2340m monitor (23" 1080). It's not bad but looking for something a bit big bigger with higher resolution.
Was thinking about getting a 1440 monitor, but not sure where the market is going to be for monitors in the upcoming years. I know 4k is becoming a thing, but where are prices on those compared to a 1440?
Also, I've seen ultrawide has recently become a thing, is that going to become a standard for gaming?
Basically, what I'm asking is what should I look in to that's not going to be obsolete in 5 years, but also not going to break the bank.
Most common games I play are Skyrim, Diablo 3, Path of Exile, Minecraft, Overwatch, League of Legends. I don't play competitively in anything, just for fun
Stock speed AMD 8320 CPU, 8gb ddr3 ram, 7870 gfx card

A 1440p or 4k monitor is out of the question for you until you get a new video card.

Any 24"+ / 1080p / IPS monitor will do. You can get a FreeSync ultrawide 75Hz one for not too much.

I'm not super familiar with hardware these days, but I've seen several articles of the 7870 being able to run Skyrim at 1440 on ultra in the 70 fps range. Wouldn't that be the most gpu intensive game of the bunch?

your card can't push 60 in ultra bf3 at 1080p so yeah i doubt it very much.

skyrims an old game bro i mean there re-mastering it so you need to factor that in.
idk how demanding overwatch is but I'd bet its more so then skyrim.

if he upgrades his monitor past his needs then he will not have to upgrade it later considering most people will upgrade their pc(and/or components) multiple times before their monitor

This as well. If I have to lower my gfx settings a bit for the time being, that's fine. But for what I do (mostly Diablo 3 and a the remastered Skyrim), I feel like I could be looking at a much better picture with a better monitor.
/e I am looking into selling my current setup and buying a new one with a 1060 or 480, so lets pretend I have those.

what is your budget?
do you want more vibrant colors or fluidity or both this also depends on budget too?
which size 27 30 ultrawide interest you?

Was trying to keep it under $350ish. Nice colors > fluidity to an extent, still don't want it to noticeably fuck up the picture when I'm playing.
The way I look at it, I'd rather play a game like Skyrim (remastered edition ofc) at 1440 and drop things like shadows and misc particles to stay at 60fps, than play at 1080 with all other specs maxed.
Seemed like 1440 started in the 27-30 inch range, that seems fine. Never really used an ultrawide but not opposed to the concept. I'm more concerned if 21:9 will become a normal resolution in 5 years and 16:9 will be where 4:3 is now.

1060 or 480 isn't worth the upgrade imo
