No laptop is going to hold up for long to any serious gaming requirements
Now, if you are OK with light gaming/lower side of graphics settings, an Asus Ultrabook with a GTX 960m isn't a bad idea, I have an older model with a 620m and it has been a great laptop, OK gaming machine, great for school, light, long battery, thin, nice fit and finish, etc
While I agree with the general sentiment, it's really going to depend on what he's trying to play. The 960m would likely hold him over for awhile as long as he's okay with lowering settings on newer games as time goes by.
