/e USB 3.1 has a max. bandwidth of 1.25 GB/s
The NVMe standard has a bandwidth of anywhere from 16 GB/s to 40 GB/s depending on the chipset/CPU.

So running PCIe (NVMe) standard would be seriously bottle-necked by even USB 3.1.
