Looking to get a laptop for my mom for Christmas. Looking for it to be cheap. She is going to be spending 95% of her time web browsing. She also needs a USB 2.0 to print.

I'm trying to stay under $200, but all laptops under 200 have only 2GB of RAM. I've never had less than 4 on a computer, so I'm not sure of the limitations of 2GB.

What would be considered too much of a work load for 2GB? Will 2GB suit her needs, or should I just invest in a little more expensive 4GB laptop?

Will do the job browsing for a year at best, after that it would be bloated and memory leak probably.

Buy her a tablet instead

If it is user accessible ram you can just purchase a larger stick and replace it

but you will want to make sure what it has and what you can access

for instance, my ultrabook came with 4gb of ram

one slot I can get to
the other is some sort of hardwired ram or a slot that you cannot easily get to

So run a 2gb stick and an 8gb stick for a total of 10

Some laptops you can get to both slots

some that have 2gb will just have a single stick, in which case the upgrade to 4 is cheap, and the upgrade to 8 wouldn't be too much more than that

Thanks guys, I decided to just go with 4gb, simply because I do not trust her to properly maintain the computer... defragging, disk cleaning, etc.. lol
