I've been using a 40" 4k tv as my computer monitor and it's awesome for the most part but I still have to minimize/maximize windows when I have a lot of stuff up (VMs, dev tools, remote desktops, games, chat, web browser)

If I could get double the size/resolution around 80-100" with 7680×4320 resolution on one panel that would be perfect... I'm not a fan of multi-panel setups

How long do you think before 8k becomes mainstream?

well if you go into an electronics store most tvs are 4k (at least in the us)
when i visited dubai a couple years ago they had 5k tvs in stores
i think 1080p is on its way out

i bought an ibm t221 back in ~2002 had 4k res when most people were still using 1024x768 lul
there's 8k out there already just super expensive
costs more than a car etc

Multiple panel setups are far superior than a single panel. This is because Windows window snapping is complete trash.

If you're using a tiling WM on Linux though it would be alright because it is smart enough to move/resize windows on the fly:
