So I got these "JBL arena 120" bookshelf speakers a bit back on sale but haven't got around to setting them up
https://www.amazon.ca/JBL-Arena-120-Black-Wall-mountable/dp/B00W5YE820

Basically I need an amp to run them. Was thinking of getting these
https://www.amazon.ca/Topping-TP22-Tripath-Class-T-Amplifier/dp/B00IZS5C3O/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

Thinking maybe a receiver/amp combo instead
https://www.amazon.ca/Onkyo-TX8020-TX-8020-Stereo-Receiver/dp/B00EE18O7W/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1477277190&sr=1-1&keywords=Onkyo%20TX-8020.

https://www.amazon.ca/Yamaha-R-S202BL-Stereo-Receiver/dp/B01EMQI2CU/ref=pd_sim_23_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=1YDDG8F6H6MVEGTX1TH6

Also guess it's worth getting a sub too at some point? I am just using this in a smallish size bedroom.

Is it worth getting a receiver/amp combo of some sort for the long run instead like
https://www.amazon.ca/Onkyo-TX8020-TX-8020-Stereo-Receiver/dp/B00EE18O7W/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1477277190&sr=1-1&keywords=Onkyo%20TX-8020.

If you plan on getting a few more speakers/Sub, Then the receiver is what you want.

If not, An amp is just fine.

If you want to future proof then go with a receiver. Receivers also usually come with room corrections and many other usefull features when basic amp only powers your speakers. I would look for cheapest receiver from either Denon / Marantz / Yamaha that has all the features you like to have. This site has some great deals if you can order from there directly or get some one to assist you: http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/category/avreceiver/home-audio/receivers-amps/home-theater-receivers/1.html

If you are going to use those speakers nearfield/not plan to play really loud in stereo/2.1 then either of these amps could do the job:

general rule is to never go with a surround receiver if you know you're never going to have a surround setup... so if you're stereo for life then you'll get much more of an amplifier for your money going pure stereo amplification route.

Then again the Denon AVR-1911 7.1 receiver drives my Bowers & Wilkins DM685s perfectly. (got it on 40% sale so was a steal)

Nice set of speakers btw

surround isn't superior to stereo by anymeans.. its just different.

but if you spend 300 dollars on a two channel amp vs 300 dollars on a machine that functions as a 7 channel pre-amplifier, power amplifier, DAC, headphone amplifier, HDMI ports, 1080p/4K video upsaler, etc, etc you'll obviously get more performance from the former.

Not really the case today anymore as you can get really good deals on receivers and the prices have gone down. Also speakers today are quite power efficient and for normal listening volume you only require few watts so you don't need a beefy 2 channel amp unless you have some speakers that are truly power hungry. When you compare 2 channel amp with features that modern receivers offer you need easily pay double the price for 2 channel amp vs receiver to get the features. So in the end it is better buy receiver over 2 channel amp if you need any features from your amp other than just power your speakers. If you just need a power amp you can get away cheap with amp like Lepai.
