I have this motherboard -->
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128602
I just got this as a gift -->
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0D9-0006-000G9
Is there an adapter or PCI card I can buy that allows me to use this M.2 SSD?

Pretty sure it needs to be an NVMe SSD if you need to use PCI-E converter card.

wouldn't it be easier to return said gift and get what you need vs spending more money.
IE a normal SSD.

But will a regular M.2 SATA SSD work in PCI-E like a NVMe SSD?
