Roommate said her laptop updated today without her permission and all of her files are lost, less the stuff on her onedrive

Any way to fix this through a system restore or something? I've never done it before so idk what to tell her

You can roll back (assuming the update was windows 10)
but all files should be located in her windows.old folder.

we need mroe info though as in what update your referring to and what os etc.

She had windows 10 already so it wasnt that

if she was n 10 already roll it back to a previous state

by that i mean not to windows 7 but to an earlier date.
alternatively you can try easeus to recover files also should probably do this first

Yea, the latest updates by windows is messed up... My logonscreen freezes and explorer freezes 1/3 times upon startup.

Will remove latest updates, thats for sure. Gui is awful now aswell. Admin prompt makes me cringe
