I have an external hard-drive that recently started getting a CRC ( Cyclical Redundancy Check ) issue.
Interestingly enough ; it is not on the whole drive, only one folder.
However, this folder has 4,000 of my photos....

I've Run CHKDSK, which says the disk can't be scanned, and the Repair Disk cmd as well. To no avail.
I am going to try one more time to repair disk as admin ( although my user is an admin, I was doing some reading after I started running repair that I should just run as admin regardless.)

Should the repair fail again - what do?

I've read about some HDD utility programs, but I don't know which ones are good and safe. If anyone could recommend one [and why] , I'd be appreciative.

And I'm guessing that if an HDD program can't fix it my next bet is data recovery. And I don't know how expensive that can get :/

Really hoping someone here knows more than I do.

EDIT: Running cmd Repair now (as admin) , if it matters I can post the results

Spinrite (not free) or testdisk (free but not user friendly).
Since your after pics only try PhotoRec which is a testdisk alternative.

Don't mind paying if it is less than the cost of getting a data recovery service.
Any other programs/solutions?

E// Admin repair worked, thank you though !

No aside from an expert level service there is not.
No data recovery solution is going to be under 1k and upwards to 10k.

If you lived near me I could assist but your in Florida.

Spinrite only benefit is when other applications try to pull data and get rejected they normally stop trying.
Spinrite on the other hand will keep trying endlessly and sometimes it works wonders cause of it.
while the software is older now and out of date I still use it for this reason only.
