I was given a brand new laptop that someone had only used for a couple months. The issue is this person is really careless with his possessions, particularly anything to do with technology. I believe he really mistreated this laptop. He visited a lot of shady websites (of the sexual variety, I'm sure you get what I mean) and some other sketchy sites that I couldn't really identify. He also did a ton of streaming and gaming at the same time, he'd have 2-3 graphically intense games up at the same time while streaming on Twitch while surfing the web while listening to music while doing this blah blah blah. I think it could have overheated at some point. All in all he just really mistreated it and within two months it started going really slow. I was given it to use later for grad school, and now I'm starting grad school, so I'm trying to fix it before I start class next week.

Basically what I'm seeing is that it's obnoxiously slow. I think it's an actually good laptop so it should not be going as slow as it is, there's gotta be something wrong with it. Wondering if it's fixable or not. It essentially takes around 10 minutes to actually turn on, takes another at least 5 to start up a program, programs start really slow the entire time its on, stuff loads really slow (although the internet works great). I thought it might have a virus of some sort, after around 20 min Malwarebytes finally loaded up and I did a scan, it didn't find anything. I uninstalled all the weird programs he had for streaming and uninstalled every single video game also. just the basics are installed now

Some of the specs
Intel Core i7-4510U @ 2.00GhZ (also says 2.60 GHZ)
8GB RAM
Windows 10 64 bit
Nvidia geforce 840M

It shouldn't be going super slow right?

Any suggestions on how to speed this thing up.

Get SPECCY here: http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download
...get the FREE version from the: Piriform Link
...Speccy is a really nice system hardware/temperature, information Utility.
...simply install it...and run the program...then post a screen shot of the main page of the program, when posting a problem/question on these forums.

That laptop should have a Factory Restore partition. I would call ASUS and ask them how to access it.
Then you can Restore the laptop to like new condition.

ASUS notebook tech support: 888-678-3688

/ee I mean, it's never gonna be a lightning fast laptop: no SSD, only 840m, only 8GB of RAM. But it should be a lot faster than 10 minutes to boot. :)

I upgraded to Windows 10 recently with the free upgrade that Windows offered. is it going to go back to the crappy windows 8 or whatever it had before if I do this? Will i be able to upgrade again to windows 10 for free?

wondering if im better off buying a brand new $300 laptop from Best Buy or something. all it needs to do is microsoft word and some statistical programs like SPSS. it'd probably be faster than this..

Yes you will be able to re-upgrade.

Yes, you can still buy a POS $300 laptop from Best Buy. You can also do both.

Might as well try to do the factory reset and see if it fixes this one. sounds cheaper lol

Can't hurt. After factory reset, if it's still slow....then it's the hardware.

Not sure if the factory reset was a good idea, now I have to pay for Windows 10 because the free upgrade deal ended in July....thought you said it would let me have it :\
I would have done the reset that allows you to keep your current version of Windows if you hadn't told me that :(

Not even gonna say anything
