The laptop would be sitting on my lap.

Just trying to get the best air cooler for my $$, would need to be able to sit on my bed with the laptop

The laptops cooling vents are on the sides and the back...usually. These need to be kept un-blocked, for the laptop to stay cool.

Might be better to just have a 14" x 18" hard surface, rather than a laptop cooler.
Wouldn't want a blanket to get sucked into one of those laptop cooler fans.

Coolers of any sort are bad.
The design/fans are meant to be adequate. If you start changing the way it cools there is a potential you will create a hot spot and make it worse.

I am pretty sure this is not great advice.

Just get a 1/4 sheet of Masonite (tempered hardboard) and cut it down to size. (just bigger than your laptop).

Will give you a light weight (very light weight) surface for your laptop, that you can use anywhere.
