On my windows 7 64 bit laptop the windows update just stays on "checking for updates". My usb ports are also unresponsive. I just did a windows restore but the updater says the same thing. Ideas?

It works. I did it on my Win 7 install.

If this gives you an error (particularly 800736B5), you may have to install KB3020369 first to update the Windows servicing stack, before installing KB3161647.
