Looking for a new laptop. Mainly for school and to code on but I'd like to be able to game on it as well so a decent-good graphics card is fine(mainly for dota and what not nothing super intensive/watching movies).
I haven't really kept up with laptops so I don't know much about them.
If possible, I'd like a rather slick/thin for mobile use.
Weight isn't a problem but light weight would be nice.
SSD 256-512. Is it possible to have a SSD and HD on a laptop?
In terms of processors, I don't know the full details behind these either.

Im not on a strict budget but I'm not trying to go all out either. If theres a good deal or a good computer that fits these criteria please let me know!

It's a lot easier for us to suggest a laptop, if we know approximately what you are willing to spend.

Yes, there are laptops with larger SSDs and higher resolution screens.
Again, it would help if you were a little more specific.

Lastly, we need to know, in what country you will be buying this laptop.

They are all 1920 x 1080 resolution.


Look for laptops with a 6000 series Intel CPU, 16GB of RAM and any grfx part, GTX 960 or above. Things like weight, backlit keyboards, battery life, etc., are up to you.


You can use Newegg's navigation panel (left side of their page) to "sort" for w/e you want...really.

Then, when you find a few that fit your desires, maybe post back here and ask for opinions on your choices.

Im willing to spend ~1000 preferably lower but max maybe up to 1200 if its REALLY worth it/good deal.
I'll be purchasing it in the US/using it here as well.

Edit: Just saw your edit and i'll try that. I'll see what fits my liking and post back. Are there "custom made laptops"? Similar to how you can customize a PC by picking parts.

Yeah, Newegg's navigation tools are excellent.

I just started with: Computer Systems > Gaming Laptops ...and went from there. You should be able to see the things I sorted for at the top-center of the page.


/e On the left side you can change the things I sorted for. For example if you'd rather have 2560 x 1440 resolution...just UNcheck 1920 x 1080 and checkmark the higher resolution.




You can even sort for the weight and how many cells the battery has (the more the better). Or you could start over with: Computer Systems > Gaming Laptops....

I would recommend you choose New and the companies: ASUS, MSI, Acer and Lenovo.

I do have a few questions that I could proably find on google but would probably understand better from someone here.

Does a duo vs quad core matter a lot in laptops? I understand that,yes, it's twice as many cores but how does that affect functionality? Twice as fast?

When it comes to "types" of laptops are zenbooks and ultrabooks brand specific? Or are they universal terms for laptops. Since I was looking for light/thin I assumed zen/ultra.

/ee Last thing to consider: Remember that sometimes, games go from version 2 to version 3. Or sometimes a game you like, may force a patch that has higher requirements...like WoW just did.

I would err on the side of MORE grfx power, rather than just enough.

So after looking i came across a few but none really met what you spoke of.

I realized that most laptops don't come with a decent graphics card unless they are "gaming" laptops. I tried to look for a ultrabook/thin laptop that would fit this criteria and this was as close as I got

The rest can go on the HDD so id say this is the IDEAL setup where it has all the features the graphics card, cpu, ram, etc. a smaller SSD.

If you can find one similar to the 2nd link that would be better in any other aspect than the ssd lmk!

Might want to try "sorting" for an 8 or 9 cell battery. Anything less, and you won't be running on battery very long, before you need to go on wall power.

You can definitely get by with 128GB SSD and 1TB HDD

Mmm that would make it last longer but a lot heavier and bulkier? Unless thin laptops can have 8/9cell batteries as well

Well, if you can get by with the Intel CPU grfx, then go for a 6 cell battery.

With a discrete grfx card, you pretty much want a serious battery.
