My brother has an old Tower hes trying to revive. Its running Vista

His problem is sometimes it will randomly lock and he has to force shut it down with button.

No blue screen or anything, just a freeze.

Does this sound like a hardware problem or a software problem? Overheating maybe? It is blown out though.

What are his options for upgrading (would prefer fresh install) from vista to 7/8/10?

Thanks

You solved the problem. Get Windows 7 64 bit, for starters....then if you want you can still do a free upgrade to Win 10

For either Win 7 or Win 10, you can get the CD key from Kinguin for like $30....then just get the Windows .iso image to match the key you got. I would suggest the Pro version of Win 7 or Win 10.

You can safely skip Win 8.1...it's a dog, like Vista. :)

Get the image that matches as in if he goes with pro, get the pro image? Or is it more complicated depending on the specific key he gets

get the cd key for Windows X Pro 64 bit. Then get the .iso to match.
