i5-6500, not overclocked, stock coooler.
XFX R9 390, with MSI Afterburner, 50%+ power limit, 1075mhz core clock, 1550mhz memory.

On intensive gaming where the CPU and GPU are both maxxed out the CPU gets to around 60 degrees C, and the GPU gets to almost 80. That seems quite high to me but I have read that GPU's can handle that temperature.

Case is a Thermaltake H25, it's cheaply made but does have decent options for cooling and is well vented. Currently running 2x intake fans and one rear exhaust, has space for 2 top exhaust fans.

It's worth noting that it has been quite warm lately, I'm sat 3 feet away from a 12" fan on full speed.

Should I consider getting a couple of extra fans and a fan controller, or a CPU cooler? Or not worry about it, assuming overall temps might drop when the weather gets cooler?

Cpu is completely fine at 60c, Try upping your fan speed on the GPU while gaming though, 80c is a bit warm.

GPU fan speed is set to ramp up quite fast as soon as it starts getting warm and then once it's at 60 degrees it's at 100%. It idles around 35 degrees @ 40% while just browsing and watching youtube.

Also if it makes any difference my case is very tidy, no messy wiring, and no dust.

Maybe take the gpu out and blow any dust out of it. With the fan running 100% it should get that hot

E/ an extra exhaust fan on top couldn't hurt though

Things that can effect GPU temp...

Dust ofc
Room temp
The computer case itself..aka not enough airflow etc.

Too much overclock.

/e Too much screen real estate..aka working the GPU too hard.

/ee Room fans don't make things cooler...they just move the hot air around faster.


The main thing to consider is room temp...aka ambient temp. At best you can only get things like GPUs and CPUs, down close to room temp. In most cases, you can't get down close to room temp.


If you only have two drives...try mounting one at the very top, and the other at the very bottom, so they don't block the intake fans.

Another thing that helps, is to mount the power supply with the fan down, so it sucks air from the bottom of the case.

Also, make sure to keep the front intake fan filter clean.

Your temps are fine. If you want lower temps buy aftermarket cooling and reduce your room temperature.

This includes:
-after market cpu coolers
-better fans for your case
-upgrading to water cooling

Other fixes are to reapply thermal paste on your GPU and/or cpu.

But again your temps are fine. My amd 7890 runs similar temperatures at 60% speed.

He has a point...his vid card is hitting 80C at 100% fan speed. That's not too good.

80 isnt that bad considering its 390 after intense gaming

From what I've read it sounded like when he sets his GPU to 100% fan speeds it only ever reaches 60C.

If it reaches 80C at 100% speed then yes I agree that is bad, but 80C in itself is nothing to worry about.

I agree. If the GPU hits 80C at 60% fan speed, that would be OK.
