If looks aren't an absolute must have...

Get some 2" galvanized pipe and some flanges, at a place like Home Depot.

I built a solid ass desk for like 35$ with one sheet of mdf and a can a can of rustoleum

what exactly is mdf? like high quality particle?

Yeah, it is. It also needs supported under it's entire length. (at least for the length, you're looking at)
