With consoles you do have to update the system software but it's simple and hands-off. You never get into problems like having to keep trying random minor driver revisions to figure out which ones will work with a new game or having random windows issues or the like. The benefit is in the simplicity and having fewer things to do do wrongly. You also have to know just about nothing about computers or software to do a console update.

Ok, I'm not going to claim to know as much as you guys about hardware or software stuff, but won't drivers be handled by the Steam OS? Like, won't it be automatic like it is with a console?

I would think drivers would be automatically detected and installed, or am I missing something.

Also, from what I've understood from Valve, they aren't trying to take over the console scene, but rather provide an easy solution for pc gamers who want a console. They've even said that they want to encourage traditional pc gamers who prefer pc to stick with it.

I don't see how they could do it well even with the Linux-based SteamOS because they are allowing it to run on any hardware and have plans to have individual PC manufacturers make their own steam box. A solution would be to have those parties do the drivers and updates but honestly most of them can't even do Windows drivers correctly. It's going to be the same problem that a gaming PC has.

Consoles are closed-platform for a reason. This is just going to end up being yet another gaming PC with a cool controller that has all the ups and the downs of PC gaming.
