With consoles you do have to update the system software but it's simple and hands-off. You never get into problems like having to keep trying random minor driver revisions to figure out which ones will work with a new game or having random windows issues or the like. The benefit is in the simplicity and having fewer things to do do wrongly. You also have to know just about nothing about computers or software to do a console update.
Ok, I'm not going to claim to know as much as you guys about hardware or software stuff, but won't drivers be handled by the Steam OS? Like, won't it be automatic like it is with a console?
I would think drivers would be automatically detected and installed, or am I missing something.
Also, from what I've understood from Valve, they aren't trying to take over the console scene, but rather provide an easy solution for pc gamers who want a console. They've even said that they want to encourage traditional pc gamers who prefer pc to stick with it.
